Walls

What can I say about Walls
Well there short but tall
Some are curved but most are straight
I'v seen walls covered with every thing under the sun
from jute to egg crates to carpet to cloth to paneling to mirrors
the old stand by paint Oh yes lets dont forget cork.

A little wall history.

Finding the studs in a wall.       Patching holes in sheetrock.

Well lets start out talking about the differant kinds of walls
lets go back to the year 1917 and swiss ave in dallas where the road
devides into two sides.

these houses have or had 1/4" thick by 1 and 1/2" wide latus boards
nailed on the studs of the walls with about 3/8" between the boards
then they were plastered over to give the wall its finnish and then
painted.

Also around this same time they were using 1 by 6 shiplap boards for
interor walls covered with cloth and painted to make a smooth wall
these two types of walls were used untill the invent of sheetrock around
or just after WWII.

The inventing of sheetrock allowed builders to build homes much faster
with the same if not better result than the other ways of building walls.
And history marches on, here come the GI spec home or tract house,
cookie cutter homes whatever you want to call them.

These homes were fast to build and met the requirments of the average
famly just fine they were small afordable homes most had 2 or 3 bedrooms
and a bath and a half the walls in these homes were all made of sheetrock
and have lasted to this day.

Now days sheetrock is still used and is prefered over any other method
in most homes to day it's some times hard to find the studs in a wall
heres a hint on the spacing used in most homes today.

In the outside walls the stud spacing in most homes is 16 inch centers
starting from one of the corners of the room its your guess witch corner
they used, also load bearing walls inside the home are most of the time
set on 16 inch centers also.

The rest of the walls in most homes will be set on 24 inch centers.

These stud spacings allow the sheetrock to work were the sheet will stop
right in the middle of one of the studs in the wall.

Most sheetrock used for homes are 4 feet wide by 8 feet long, but
also comes in 4x9 and 4x12 sheets I have used a lot of the 4x9 in
comercial buildings.

Patching holes will be here.... HOME
